How RWT on interest works

Whenever a NZ bank or other payer credits you interest, it must withhold Resident Withholding Tax (RWT) before paying you the rest. The rate you elect should track your marginal income tax rate — the rate that applies to your top slice of income once your interest is added on top of your salary or other earnings.

Elect a rate that's too low and you'll owe IRD the difference after your income tax assessment. Elect a rate that's too high and you're due a refund — not wrong, just money sitting with IRD you didn't need to hand over early. Getting the rate right keeps your cashflow closer to correct all year round.

If you don't provide your IRD number to the payer at all, they're legally required to withhold at the no-notification rate of 45.0% — well above every individual rate option. Always give your bank your IRD number.

NZ individual RWT rates (2025-26)

RWT rate options line up with the PAYE brackets — elect the rate for the income band your total income (salary + interest + other) falls into.

Total income range RWT rate to elect
$0 – $15,600 10.5%
$15,601 – $53,500 17.5%
$53,501 – $78,100 30.0%
$78,101 – $180,000 33.0%
$180,001+ 39.0%

No rate elected → default 33.0%. No IRD number provided → no-notification rate 45.0%. On the 33.0% or 39.0% band? A PIE term deposit caps tax at 28.0% instead — see the PIE vs direct investment calculator.

RWT rate vs term deposit returns

This calculator answers one question: am I on the right RWT rate, and will I owe or be owed at year-end? If you instead want to model a specific term deposit — compounding frequency, Annual Equivalent Rate (AER), and the maturity payout after RWT — use the term deposit calculator instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is RWT (Resident Withholding Tax)?

RWT is tax your bank or other payer deducts at source from interest (and some dividends) before paying it to you. It's IRD's way of collecting tax on investment income throughout the year, rather than in one lump sum when you file. The rate you elect should match your marginal income tax rate so you're not over- or under-taxed at year-end.

Which RWT rate should I choose?

Pick the rate that matches your total taxable income (salary/wages plus interest and any other income), using the same bands as the PAYE brackets: $0 – $15,600 → 10.5%, $15,601 – $53,500 → 17.5%, $53,501 – $78,100 → 30.0%, $78,101 – $180,000 → 33.0%, $180,001+ → 39.0%. This calculator works it out for you from your income.

What's the default RWT rate if I don't elect one?

If you don't tell your bank which rate to use, they must apply the default rate of 33.0%. This can over-withhold if your marginal rate is lower, or under-withhold if it's higher — either way, you're better off electing the rate that actually matches your income.

What happens if I don't give my bank my IRD number?

If you haven't provided your IRD number to the payer, they're required to withhold at the higher no-notification rate of 45.0% — well above every individual RWT rate option. Give your bank your IRD number as soon as possible to avoid this.

Will I get a refund or owe tax at year-end on my interest?

If your elected RWT rate matches your marginal tax rate, you should be roughly square. If you elected a rate below your marginal rate, you'll owe IRD the difference (a balance owing). If you elected a rate above it, you're due a refund. This calculator shows the exact square-up.

Should I use a PIE term deposit instead of a standard one?

PIE (Portfolio Investment Entity) term deposits are taxed at your Prescribed Investor Rate, capped at 28.0% regardless of your marginal tax rate. If your marginal rate is above 28.0%, a PIE term deposit can mean less tax on the same interest — though PIE products sometimes carry a slightly lower headline rate, so compare the after-tax return. Model the deposit itself with our term deposit calculator.
