Frequently asked questions

Did NZ tax brackets change for 2026-27?

No. Income tax brackets and thresholds are frozen at 2025-26 levels for 2026-27 — the same five rates (10.5% / 17.5% / 30% / 33% / 39%) and the same thresholds ($15.6k / $53.5k / $78.1k / $180k) apply. The brackets were last changed on 31 July 2024 (Budget 2024); no new bracket or threshold change has been legislated for 2026-27.

What changed between 2025-26 and 2026-27?

Three things changed from 1 April 2026: the ACC earner's levy rate rose from 1.67% to 1.75% (income cap $152,790 → $156,641, maximum levy $2,551.59 → $2,741.22); the default KiwiSaver contribution rate for both employees and employers rose from 3% to 3.5% (Budget 2025, Taxation (Budget Measures) Act 2025); and the adult minimum wage rose from $23.50/hr to $23.95/hr. Income tax brackets, the student loan threshold, GST and the IETC are unchanged.

Will I pay more tax in 2026-27?

Income tax itself is unchanged since the brackets are frozen. However, the ACC earner's levy increased, which slightly reduces take-home pay, and KiwiSaver members on the default contribution rate will see a higher deduction (3% → 3.5%) unless they apply for a temporary rate reduction back to 3%. The net effect on your take-home pay depends on your income and KiwiSaver settings.
